The fate of this 1966 Ford Mustang Coupe is amazing. As a new car it rolled off
the assembly line in 1966 with 499,751 other Mustang Coupes.
Forty years later it was completely disassembled for restoration when Hurricane
Katrina filled the warehouse it was stored in with brackish water.
The owner, hesitant to proceed with his project without a good approach to
corrosion control contacted Select Motor Company.
Select Motors offered a chemical stripping process that included re-plating and
sealing the body after stripping.
When the coupe was cleaned of corrosion suspension work began. An independent
rear suspension or IRS from a 2004 Mustang Cobra was custom fitted to the rear
of the car. An independent front suspension or IFS, with Mustang II technology
from Heidts Hot Rod Shop was incorporated onto the front of the car.
Improvements included large Wilwood disc brakes, Koni coil over shocks, rack &
pinion steering in front of the axle, for cat like reflexes.
Strong back bracing was added to the car as the entire floor was removed and is
being replaced in one piece.
Interestingly enough, the rockers would best be described as excellent. Quarter
panels, inner cowl patch panels, the finish panel and the addition of torque
boxes are in the plans of building this car with show quality tires and a rigid
structure for handling.
